Interview: Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg on 'The World’s End'.
Whilst Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg were in New Zealand last week to premiere their new film, 'The World’s End' - the final instalment in their 'Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy', following on from 2004's 'Shaun Of The Dead' and 2007's 'Hot Fuzz' - Coup De Main challenged them both to an interrogative cake-eating competition featuring Wright's first child, Pegg's real-life [imaginary] band, and the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb.
'The World's End' centres around Pegg's character, Gary King, a 40-something who's desperate to recapture the pinnacle of his youth - or rather, life - so reunites his high school gang of best friends to attempt an encore of 'The Golden Mile' pub crawl in their hometown, Newton Haven.
One night, five dudes, twelve pubs... of course it gets messy!
Not to mention... the brawling hijinks, robot-aliens... and a lot of ink.
But it's no glorification of drinking-culture. At the heart of it all, 'The World's End' is very real...
Director/screenwriter Edgar Wright says about the film: "In this story, we address the element of just how healthy it is to be nostalgic - to look back, let alone to try to go back. Everyone has fantasized about having done things differently; we all think back on our adolescences. Each film I’ve done with Simon and Nick has had a biographical element."
And actor/screenwriter Simon Pegg adds: "It’s the most personal of our three films together. We learned on 'Shaun Of The Dead' that it was possible to combine serious situations with comedy and heart. Thematically, The World’s End is linked to the two other movies through an individual facing off against a collective, one person versus a homogenized force."
