Interview: Finn Jones a.k.a. Ser Loras Tyrell on 'Game Of Thrones'.

"NOOOO!!!!!" screams twenty-four-year-old English actor, Finn Jones. He's knocked a glass of water over a polaroid photo he had just finished drawing a unicorn onto. Relieved that his masterpiece has survived the sudden downpour, Jones exclaims: "It's lived! It's like extra special now, it's really been through... it's had an experience!"

During his first ever trip to New Zealand, Jones - who is also a DJ and member of the London based collective, Human Effort - was kind enough to forego sleeping-in, instead waking up early to meet us for a quick chat...

"The longest time I’ve stayed awake in one go? Three days or four days!"

COUP DE MAIN: A friendship-crush is someone that you have no romantic interest in whatsoever, but just really wish that you were best friends with them. Who would be your top five friendship-crushes, living or dead?
FINN JONES: Oh my god, what a question! Top five friendship crushes... okay, so people that I’d want to be friends with? In no particular order, people that I admire would be... there’s a documentary film-maker called Werner Herzog, who’s a German film-maker. I really dig his stuff, I’d love to chat with him. There’s an author called Graham Hancock who’s a very interesting guy, I’d like to be friends with him... I’m trying to think of musicians... pretty much everyone on my iPod, I’d like to be friends with. But I'd say that the main two that I’d love to get into a conversation with, are Werner Herzog and Graham Hancock. They are my two kind of... at the moment, I’m reading a lot of their stuff and watching a lot of their stuff on NPR. And an artist called Alex Grey, who I’ve just been looking at his work recently, and he does a lot of work with eyes. The one that I looked at last night, he had an eye on his hand.

CDM: What’s the last song that you listened to?
FINN: It was like a mix-tape by a guy called David August, and it was called ‘Diynamic Neon Nights’. It’s like a promo mix-tape thing, and there’s a really great - I don’t like Lana Del Rey that much - but, there’s a really great Lana Del Rey remix of ‘Summertime Sadness’, I think that’s the song, it's a Hannes Fischer remix, and that’s just - ah! - such a good remix. I think that was the last song... but that whole mix is amazing.

CDM: Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever DJ'd?
FINN: In a toilet... I DJ'd in a toilet once, it was a house party. I dunno if you could call it DJ-ing, I mean, I was on my phone. I had my phone plugged into some speakers and everyone was kind of like... <laughs> there was about twenty of us crammed into this little toilet in my flat, and yeah I was just DJ-ing off my iPhone. And yeah, that was pretty cool.

CDM: Sounds like a super intimate show...
FINN: Yeah, that’s the best kind of party!

CDM: What’s the most ridiculous time that you’ve ever had to wake up for work?
FINN: I guess for normal people the most ridiculous time would be something like 4AM or 3AM, but that kind of comes with the territory of acting - because it’s early calls and all that kind of stuff. I guess the weirdest time I’ve had to wake up for working was when I worked in a bar, and I’d start work at like 11PM. So, I’d be waking up at like 9PM, 10PM, and then working until 5AM. So I guess that’s pretty odd, having to wake up at that time to go to work because you're just like: "Whoah, fuck..." Everything is so odd.

CDM: You half know what it’s like to be a vampire. You would be qualified to be cast in a 'Twilight' movie reboot.
FINN: Yeah, boom! A bartender vampire... nice!

CDM: What’s the longest work day you’ve ever had? Or, the longest time you’ve had to stay awake in one go?
FINN: The longest time I’ve stayed awake in one go? Three days or four days!

CDM: Wow! How were you feeling towards the end of that stretch?
FINN: Great, <laughs> really good!

CDM: What’s the biggest effort you’ve ever had to make as a human being?
FINN: The biggest effort you’ve ever have to make? That’s a great question!

CDM: I’m really into puns, if you hadn't already noticed.
FINN: Yeah, that’s awesome I like that! Every day of my life I make an effort. Like, everything’s an effort - a good effort, you know? So, all the time.

CDM: What's your favourite line in 'Game of Thrones', from any character?
FINN: Oh my god, uhhmmm... it’s really hard to answer these questions on the spot! There was I think in Season One, when Ros says to Theon [Greyjoy]: "A serious boy with a serious cock." I love that line, I remember them reading that in the read-through first year, and everyone was just like: "Yes! What a line!" And when Joffrey [Baratheon] says to Arya [Stark]: "I'll gut you, you little cunt!" Arrrgghhh! It just feels so good when you say it. It’s amazing.

CDM: Lastly, do you have a message for New Zealand fans of 'Game Of Thrones'?
FINN: Yeah man, keep it real. I hope you’re enjoying it and yeah, stay alive, and keep it real.
