Grimes announces next studio album, ‘Miss_Anthropocene’.
Grimes, aka ‘c’ as per her recent name change, has shared on Instagram the announcement of her next studio album - titled ‘Miss_Anthropocene’. The album name is a play on two words; ‘misanthrope’ - a person disliking humanity, and ‘anthropocene’ - the scientific name for the current global epoch.
Lately, things have been getting consistently mysterious on the Grimes front - from the nu-metal hit ‘We Appreciate Power’ starring herself and friend Hana in Tesla’s unopened Boring Company tunnel, to the recent song ‘Pretty Dark’ - allegedly not actually by Grimes but one of her new sub-egos called Dark. It seems that ‘Miss_Anthropocene’ will be no different if c’s description of it in the caption is anything to attest to; "It’s a concept album about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate Change. A psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world." says Grimes, "She’s composed of Ivory and Oil." Apparently though, Grimes does not aim to paint climate change in a bad light.
Each song on the album will be a different interpretation of human extinction, and in the meantime a few more singles and EPs may be shared.
In her first interview in a couple of years, Grimes spoke of wanting to be free of the whole Grimes moniker - hence the name change - and that she doesn’t like being confined by the branding she came up with in 2009. “If you say you’re something, then people get super upset if you appear to be a different thing,” she says. She knows some of her fans don’t like her new music, and she plans on moving on soon - killing Grimes, so to speak.
For now though, we have a new album to look froward to, new music videos being planned, and then whatever weird and wonderful, fantastical augmented reality world c decides to take us to next.
