Julia Michaels releases video for ‘Happy’.
Julia Michaels used to write behind the scenes for the likes of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, but has morphed into a solo artist in her own right - picking up a Billboard Top 10 with her feature in Clean Bandit’s ‘Miss You’, and receiving two Grammy Awards in 2018 for her debut single ‘Issues’.
Following on with a similar theme, she released her EP ‘INNER MONOLOGUE PART I’ this year; it has gone on to receive acclaim from numerous contemporary artists and critics, debuting at #1 on the U.S. iTunes Pop Albums Chart.
‘Happy’ is the latest of her songs to receive a video treatment, and we witnesss Michaels dancing in a golden light - her childish dress and recurring child-like objects, such as a dollhouse, contrast with her repeating cries of “I just wanna be fucking happy”; juxtaposing the innocent with the dark. Michaels croons softly about craving sadness as a motivation for art and the self destructive tendencies of creative individuals - a true personal examination and, as the EP title goes, an inner monologue made vocal for all to hear.
