Coup De Main x AllTracks | NZ Music Month '16 playlist
To celebrate the beginning of New Zealand Music Month - yup, it’s May already! - we decided this week, that we’d celebrate by compiling some of our favourite NZ tunes. We'll continue to celebrate NZ Music Month over the coming weeks through a series of new features, highlighting the very best that New Zealand has to offer in the music scene.
Check out our picks below…
LONTALIUS - ‘GLOW’
'Glow' has got to be one of my favourite songs that Lontalius has ever released. Lifted from his debut album 'I'll Forget 17', it captures a beauty and intimacy that only Eddie can create in his music. The music video is equally as beautiful. Read our latest interview with Lontalius HERE, and watch the 'Glow' music video below...
LORDE - ‘RIBS’
It's hard to believe it's been two years since Lorde released her debut album 'Pure Heroine' upon the world, but watching this old performance of 'Ribs' from Live On Letterman has just reminded me why she absolutely changed the game for New Zealand music. Read our last interview with Lorde HERE, and watch the 'Ribs' performance below (while clinging onto your youth)...
MERMAIDENS - 'UNDER THE MOUNTAIN II'
When I first heard Mermaidens, I instantly fell in love. The Wellington-based group have an incredibly distinct sound and talent, which led to them opening for the likes of Death Cab For Cutie and Sleater-Kinney - and after seeing them live, I can confirm their IRL talent. 'Under The Mountain II' comes from their debut record which was released earlier this year, and the video was animated by their very own Lily West. Talk about talent. Read our interview with them HERE, and watch the music video below...
OCTOBER - ‘VOIDS’
Producer / songwriter / performer October has a darkness in her music and imagery that is haunting, yet encapsulating. I recently saw her open for Lontalius' album party in Auckland, and can testify to her performance abilities - her cover of The Stone Roses' 'I Wanna Be Adored' was amazing. Read our interview with her HERE and watch the video for 'Voids' below...
BROODS - ‘L.A.F’
You're probably no stranger to Broods, but 'L.A.F' is a slightly more unheard of song - it highlights the best of the duo. With one of the catchiest beats of their songs, the music video uses light in interesting ways, and was directed by fellow New Zealander Jordan Arts. Read our interview with them HERE, and watch the music video below...
FAZERDAZE - ‘LITTLE UNEASY’
The ultimate Summer jam has become more of an everyday song in my iPod - Fazerdaze has the type of vocals that I could listen to for days. She's one of the most inspirational women in NZ music today, as she not only writes and records all her music herself, she also produces it. Read our interview with her HERE and listen to 'Little Uneasy' below...
THOMSTON (+ WAFIA) - ‘WINDOW SEAT
Thomston's sound has developed over the past few years through the release of several EPs, and this collaboration with Australian songstress Wafia shows a new side to him. With his debut album announcement on the horizon, we couldn't be more excited for Thomston. Read our latest interview with him HERE and listen to 'Window Seat' below...
